I know a long time ago peeps were debating if this kid was a Ruki cameo in 02's Diablomon Strikes Back movie or not...

But we don't know much about DSB's production like we do about OWG (in which the storyboards definitely had a beta-design for Miyako in it...) -- so i'd just... take it as some random character with a few possible traces from Ruki's design and not as some sort of "early design" for her...

[Note: I'm changing a bit of the events of OWG here, sorry]

The Inoues were originally from Kyoto, who moved to Odaiba later once the building they live on now was open to populated somewhere in 2001. Miyako loved to help people, so her technician skills started quite early, as her brother Mantarou taught her how to fix computers and execute computer maintenance. She turned out to be quite skilled, but she didn’t stop there… She also learned to write programs and even hack them as well. For what purpose? She just thought this could’ve been useful someday…

In March 2000, she and a friend watched a fight on the internet – two monster-like creatures fighting against a very menacing one. Somehow Miyako found out there was a way to communicate with such creatures by sending an email to a person called “Izumi Koushiro”. Her friend suggested they should try to, after all it would be fun to take part in this digimon “game” right? She sent it, and the said message would later be the reason she would meet not only Koushiro but also her partner, Hawkmon.

Her computer skills weren’t her only good traits, as she was also very friendly and made friends immediately when she moved to Odaiba and joined its local Elementary School. There, she joined the computer club, met Koushiro and they formed a bond. She also befriended a small child who seemed to be too serious for his age, Iori, when he tried to confess his feelings for her. Miyako definitely was uncomfortable at first because she’s older than the child, so she said she likes older guys. But her contact with Iori didn’t stop because of her services to fix the Hidas’ computer, and then she became this lonely child’s friend for a while. Her bonds with Iori and Koushiro got more deepened when in April 2002 she got a D-3 and became partnered with Hawkmon, in order to fight the terrifying Digimon Kaiser.

Whether canon provides input on them or not:

It does - one might have to take a very close look to notice it though. The screenshot taken from the episode above might be the first thing that comes to mind when mentioning these two, as they’re getting paired up during the World Tour arc in 02 to travel to Hong Kong together. However, ever since Hikari was introduced in 01, very late in the series, there have been several instances of Koushirou being curious about her (and her strange connection to the Digital World), him interacting with and encouraging her - and he’s actually the only person Taichi tells about their childhood, thus he’s aware of her having been prone to sickness and getting hospitalized due to it. In fact, one of Koushirou’s main roles in the Dark Master’s arc is being the (emotional) support system of the Yagami siblings, which provides a nice set-up for the two of them - at least in theory. Because unfortunately, they don’t interact as much with each other just on their own. 

With Hikari being Taichi’s sister and Koushirou being his best friend, it should be a given to assume that there’s at least some kind of familiarity between them, but for the most part, the viewer has to guess how deep their bond actually goes. Hikari obviously tags along with Taichi’s group in 01 and then again with the new Chosen Children in 02, as the entire group treats Koushirou as their mentor there, but they’re not really seen talking to each other a lot. That’s even more obvious in Tri, where they’re maybe standing next to each other once or twice (culminating in the stageplay, where they aren’t interacting at all). Kizuna at least provides a shot of him panicking once he notices that she’s in danger, so he immediately contacts her brother - which basically summarizes his overall interaction theme towards her: She’s in danger/sick/some kind of otherworldly state, so he does whatever it takes to (help) saving her. The reboot, despite putting them together in Team Light, doesn’t show much interpersonal interaction between them either and the only notable thing that happens in regards to them in the novels is Koushirou sneaking out of his room in the middle of the night to confirm that the beeping dot on his digivice is indeed Hikari Yagami... 

The most interesting framing may take place in the PSP game, because it actually lets them bond; They’re talking about physical things they’re being attached to (her whistle vs. his laptop), about flowers and “the thought that counts” - and Hikari actually has a lot of praise for Koushirou as well, boosting his self-confidence in the same way he did for her in the anime, so he ends up offering to teach her how to use computers and that’s probably why she knew how to send mail in OWG... Then again, there’s also the infamous (non-canon) love letter drama - which creates a humourous non-existing “love triangle” between Koushirou, Mimi and Hikari in which it is at least implied he maaaaay have written the letter for Hikari... 

So tl;dr, there is not nothing and there IS a lot of soft potential.

Whether I think why and how they’d work:

Based on the fact that I just spent quite a while talking about the sheer potential of these two - I definitely believe that they could work. First of all, as mentioned above, they should be close(r) to each other due to their closeness to Taichi. Second of all, we see Koushirou’s protective and kind nature shining through towards her in 01. Paired up with their curious and sweet interactions in the PSP game, I am convinced that the “hyperempathic girl with the magical connection to the Digital World” and the “knowledgable support guy with a technological interest in the Digital World” could be a great (contrasting) combination to end up as a romantic couple. They’re both “weird” (and in their own worlds) in their own ways, both incredibly prone to self-sacrifice and can get pretty mad at others for doing the same (Taichi in particular, but I’m sure they’d be the same towards each other too), so they already have a lot in common. Curiosity and the will to create a wonderful, symbiotic future for the Digital World and the real world is also something that could connect them.

Thanks to the “I’m gonna teach you how to use a computer” bit, I am also sure that they’re very communicative, talking and texting on the phone/computer a lot and there’s a reason why people often headcanon Hikari providing pictures of the Digital World to Koushirou for his studies. I mean, why else would he have opened a shady looking link coming from her immediately (in Kizuna) if he wasn’t at least somewhat used to her sending him things? It’s incredibly endearing to imagine them being kind and supportive towards each other’s goals - ESPECIALLY since Hikari is aiming to become a kindergarden teacher and who would be more suitable to help her than the person who likes to teach, rant and ramble anyway??? 

They’re both not very offensive/forward when it comes to (facing) their feelings though, in fact, they tend to keep those to themselves rather consistently. Thus, it may be a veeeery persistent slow burn - and Takeru would prooobably have the time of his life dropping hints towards both of them. Koushirou might not get it and Hikari would pout at him and get defensive - but they’d get there. One day, for sure.

I also love the idea of them going on double dates with Taichi and Sora - Team Light should generally be much closer than what canon was showing and I cannot imagine Taichi not giving Koushirou his blessings (despite everything that happened in the infamous love letter drama mentioned above).

Whether I’d prefer them as platonic or romantic ship:

In case it hasn’t been obvious, I love the idea of these two falling for each other and helping the other to realize that their self-sacrificing tendencies have been quite unhealthy in the past - growing and healing while building a future for the Digital and real world together. However, I also like the idea of them just being platonic study buddies, as outlined above, forever giggling together over Taichi bluescreening his PC for the millionth time.

I was asked about this topic recently, and, being bored out of my mind, I felt inspired to use it as a starting point for a new series! I hope to share my current headcanons about the personality types of the Digimon Adventure universe’s main characters, according to different personality systems: astrology, Enneagram, MBTI... feel free to suggest any other typologies you’d like me to explore in the future.

In this first post, I’ll try to explain which of the Sun Sign personality archetypes I find more likely and interesting for each character. Consider this this an update of my previous headcanons, post-tri. (and post LAST EVOLUTION Kizuna).

1: DIGIMON ADVENTURE + ZODIAC SIGNS

Note: Every single headcanon is highly subjective and even I will probably change my mind about it. This is only a PROPOSAL.

Canon Clues 

Although there are no official birthdays for the characters, several Adventure materials have provided “goalposts” where we can fit some characters’ birthdays. I strive to make my HCs as canon-compliant as possible, so it’s important for me to take this info into account.

Miyako is stated to be a Gemini in 02.

The official synopsis of tri. Indicates that Taichi is 17 years old during the series, suggesting the has an April-June birthday.

Sure, you’re free to ignore this little nugget if you prefer, but I personally like to think there’s a reason they mentioned Taichi’s age explicitly — something they never did before. They also never mentioned the explicit age of any of the other characters.

Funnily enough, the DALEK official website and novel lists the character’s ages during the events of the film. Since the film takes place in the summer of 2010, taking those numbers at face-value would require us to believe all 8 characters have birthdays in the first half of the year. 

This contradicts the explicit on-screen information about Jou’s age in the original series (see below). 

I’m proposing this should be interpreted as their “average” ages, rather than precise ages at this specific moment in time — after all, in Kizuna it’s more difficult to identify the characters by their school year, like they always did before.

Sora’s birthday is canonically before the events of Our War Game. The film takes place during the spring holidays, which typically begin around the third week of March.

Sora having a March birthday is so universally accepted by Japanese fans that it’s even on her Wikipedia page. I wouldn’t be surprised if more recent writers took that information into account, post-OWG, and portrayed her accordingly. 

Notice that Pisces is only the more likely option considering the canon timeline and Sora’s personality — Aries (late March) and Aquarius (mid-February) could fit as well. Hence why I consider this choice [semi-canon].

Jou, who is a 6th-grader, mentions he’s 11 years old during Adventure. This suggest his birthday would be after August 1.

Ken is supposed to be 9 years old in August 2000, when he’s in Year 3, suggesting he has an April-August birthday.

This is different from other guidebooks which only list the characters “average” ages, because this lists Ken’s precise age during a specific event.

I believe Ken being exactly 9 years old went to the Digital world is deliberate, since Osamu is stated to be 3 years older than Ken, hadn’t yet turned 12 when he died.

Again, except for Miyako, Sora, and Jou birthdays, I can understand why fans chose to ignore any of this.

Personal Notes

My method isn’t about finding a putative “Official / True Birthday” — that never existed, at least for the Adventure eight. It’s about finding birthdays that work within the limitations of canon (see previous section). 

My HCs are based on the personality / character archetypes represented by the the zodiac signs. In theory, any Chosen Child could be understood as representing a specific symbolical archetypes.

The problem is that the Adventure characters are quite complex and often deconstruct traditional archetypes. This explains why it’s so hard for fans to agree on which sign they are supposed to represent. I should also note that anime series seem to understand astrological archetypes slightly differently from the Western mainstream tradition, which explains why typical anime zodiac signs sometimes feel a bit “off”. 

Nevertheless, some archetypes are so strong that most of the fandom seems to have reached a consensus: Jou/Virgo and Koushirou/Aquarius, for example. Then you have textbook examples of archetypes like Gemini/Miyako (unsurprisingly canon), Taichi/Aries, and Hikari/Pisces. But even there is a lot of room for disagreement and subjective interpretation!

The 02 writers clearly intended Daisuke to symbolise Fire, Miyako Air, Iori Earth and, due to the Dark Ocean connection, Ken Water. In fact, it’s super easy to place those four characters into any traditional 4-group personality types, such as the four temperaments, Jung’s types, blood types, ABCD personality, etc. 

My HCs respect this, and ended up creating two polar opposites within the team: Daisuke/Miyako (mutable) and Ken/Iori (cardinal).

It’s tempting to ascribe 12 main characters = 12 signs, but post-tri. I’m inclined to do something different and not put myself into such a limiting framework.

For this reason I repeat some signs, and I don’t have any Taurus character (sorry!).

My MAIN innovative choice is that I suspect Taichi and Yamato might represent the same sun sign.

Now, I understand this is an extremely controversial opinion. It isn’t a possibility I thought about until quite recently.

But Taichi and Yamato being “different but the same / two sides of the same coin” is incredibly well represented if both of them correspond to the Aries personality archetype. 

After all, they’re the leaders, the heroes, the Knights in shining armor. This explains their incredible similarities, despite superficial differences. as well as their love-hate dynamic: the rivalry, the union, the way they complement and balance each other out in an almost instinctive way.

Here are some examples of the Aries/Aries dynamic from the literature... 

Both of you are independent individuals and you don’t like feeling “owned” by anyone. Neither of you can tolerate being dominated or bossed by anyone else, so you probably make your own decisions, and direct your own lives. You respect one another’s autonomy, and a relationship that is based on constant togetherness and dependency wouldn’t suit either of you. Sometimes, however, there is too much emphasis on individualism rather than on being close and nurturing the relationship. You both have proud egos, and are sensitive to criticism. Almost inevitably you will compete with each other, and in small doses this can be invigorating. But it easily becomes nasty, and one of you is likely to get hurt. If you’ve ever seen two rams locking horns, you know what I mean! You either respect one another immensely or detest one another – rarely anything in between. (X)

If your relationship has been built on the basis that you are equals, the fire element produces tremendous vision and industriousness. Your combined power and effort could well be a force to be reckoned with — but again, only if you both learn to subdue your own ego in the service of each other. Remember, you can’t always be right. You need to try hard to see things from each other’s perspective; this will help the two of you become a great partnership over time. (x)

When Mars clashes with Mars, the result can be full-scale war, with all flags flapping, bravely and colorfully. Occasional flare-ups are bound to occur when these two are thrown into close, daily proximity, without the relief of some separateness in their association. But there will also be some glorious Highs to offset these Lows. (...)  It's been said that Aries people have a way about them. They do. Their own way. Yet, despite that sometimes antagonistic Martian exterior, they'll sense each other's desperate need to be appreciated and liked. When they get together, they may struggle for leadership, but the experience will supply some well-needed lessons. The shock of living with someone - or being around some- one - as innocently thoughtless, selfish and aggressive as one's self, is sure to soften any battering Ram, although there may be a few scars to show for the les- sons in living thus mastered. Aries hearts always carry more scars than the Rams ever show, or openly discuss. (x)

Sounds familiar, doesn't it? The more you read, the more this pattern begins to make sense. Try to watch the Dark Masters arc, the Agumon-is-kidnapped mini arc, tri., and even Kizuna with this possibility in mind, and you’ll understand what I mean.

Sure, order to accept this theory, you have to understand Yamato as a more atypical reserved / sensitive Aries (influenced by a Cancer Moon, perhaps?) and Taichi as a more “pure” Arien type. Yamato is more like a baby lamb, right? (don’t tell it to his face).

You can make a very strong argument for Leo!Taichi (that was my initial HC as well) or Yamato as almost anything else. I wouldn’t disagree. But why not come up with a fresh perspective to explain these two? 

Oh, and in case you’re curious, their (canon) Japanese Zodiac is also the same: Dragon, the direct equivalent to Aries.

A note about tri.: typing Maki and Daigo seemed straightforward enough. Maki is the stereotypical Scorpio antagonist, and Goggle Boy Daigo’s partner evolved into a literal lion.

I couldn’t resist the idea of making Meiko a Libra, considering her digimon partner is literally the Libra and Meiko is the 9th member of the group. But  personality probably fits other signs better — it’s very tempting to type her a Virgo, the polar opposite of Hikari. She could also be the missing Taurus element (Mei as the literal May Queen). 

The truth is... I can’t decide!

Disclaimer: There is zero scientific evidence for astrology and, as far as I’m concerned, it’s only interesting as a tool to analyze fictional characters in symbolic /archetypal terms. My headcanons are based on extensive reading about astrology, its symbolism and psychological profiles; I’m happy to share my sources (they’re not from pop astrology). But I’m also aware of the Barnum effect. We are all biased; there are no right or wrong options. Everyone’s conflicting headcanons are equally valid.

Kizuna Shitpost

Spoilers below, obviously!

SOOOO!!!! I just finished watching Kizuna, like, finally. I had expected to watch this a while ago so it was time it finally happened, am I right?

Having that said, I did read the novel as soon as I could, but I always had the feeling it wouldn’t be the same as watching the movie. I know watching leaked art isn’t right, but it could be 2022 by the time it officially gets to western public.

IT WAS SO GOOD????? LIKE???? I LIKED IT SO MUCH???

If you watch it expecting it to be a Taichi and Yamato movie, there are zero disappointments. ZERO, NONE. It’s a movie about both protagonists, the end of their era as Chosen Children and it’s beautiful. I thought it was well balanced and the battles were great, even for someone like me who really doesn’t care about the battles as much as I do about the character development.

I gotta admit that Yamato shined the most for me. He is heads down an FBI agent himself, and the time he called Daisuke? It melted my heart. ALSO, I THINK ITS ARMADILLOMON WHO SAYS HE PREFERS YAMATO’S RAMEN. YAMATO COOKS FOR THE 02 KIDS I’M GOING BACK TO CRYING!!!!

I’m absolutely not gonna make any deep analysis on this, I’m just fangirling as I bet you already told.

Miyako speaking Spanish? Showstopping, unbelievable, amazing, beautiful. I really missed the 02 kids so much I’m so glad they were back even if it wasn’t for long. We deserve another movie with them as protagonists considering at the end it is implied they’re the only ones with their partners left.

Even though I already knew Sora wouldn’t appear, it still hurt not to see her. She was what? 30 seconds total on screen? Plus she was the first one to lose her partner :( I’m going to pretend Yamato warned her about it and Sora enjoyed as much of her time with Piyomon as she could.

Menoa was a great villain, at the end she was heads down a psychopath. Yes, what happened to her was sad but sister, kidnapiing people and lockind down their memories? Oh my God. AND WANTING TO BEOME THEIR GODDESS ON TOP OF IT ALL? Yes, it’s probably close to Maki’s story but better executed in my opinion.

For 90 minutes, as I already mentioned, it was well balanced. I’M SO HAPPY WE DIDN’T INVEST ANY UNNECESSARY TIME ON EVOLUTIONS, THANK GOD. Speaking on which, I think this “new evolution” was unnecessary. It was on screen less than Sora, and what for? Will we remember them? No, so? But I guess it was all about the marketing.

AND LAST BUT NOT LEAST!!!! I hope everyone stayed for the credits. It’s not a Marvel movie, but those images at the end MADE MY HEART SO FULL. Especially Miyako’s. I feel like I will be rewatching Kizuna as often as I rewatch OWG or DSB. 

Already a classic in my heart.

Despite this, the 02 ages and Taichi’s given ages since remain official, so take Kakudou’s word with a grain of salt as well, however, it is still notable. [ x ] asker on Twitter: “Is this true? [Link to an image with the Chosen Children and zodiac signs.]” Kakudou: “It’s not true. The only one with a set birthday is Miyako. The other characters don’t have set birthdays.” (emphasis / italics mine) - The 02 Memorial Book also confirms Jun Motomiya (Daisuke’s older sister) to be 17 in 11th grade, however her friend and Miyako’s older sister Momoe is also confirmed 11th grade. Note we also have no confirmation of either’s birthday ranges. They are NOT in 12th grade / 18 in the Japanese version (it literally isn’t possible unless they also have conflicting ages, which seems unlikely as both have their grades confirmed to be 11th... and Jun’s age “17″.) - This could mean either could have actually been around 16 at the start of 02 OR within an accurate real-world setting without the timeline inconsistencies. - this is also despite Taichi (and some of the other Chosen) often officially being given the “older” age range for his school grades’ years. Note Jun and Momoe are also not part of the “main” Chosen Children group and do not become Chosen until post-02. - In comparison, Chizuru (Miyako’s other sister)’s grade is also confirmed to be 8th, “same as Yamato”’s. - If Taichi + Yamato are officially confirmed 14 in 02, they would be on the “older” end of their grades’ age ranges (13~14, with Taichi+Yamato by extension being 14). Koushiro and Mimi are confirmed 13 in 02, placing them one year younger than Taichi exactly regardless of where their “birthdays” may fall, again implying they’re on the older end of their age ranges if their birthday ranges follow a similar pattern. This is also despite a real-world setting implying they should be younger (i.e. 13~), and could be because they’re a part of the “main” Chosen Children group. (i.e. “conflicting age”) - There is nothing confirming their ages to be more than a year less than Taichi’s. If going by 02′s confirmed material only, they’re a year less exactly by any (CERTAIN) point of any series in the canon, and anything else is unofficial. - their official ages are also not confirmed in any Tri materials. If Taichi is 18 during (any point of), or by the end of Tri [likely], as he was 14 in (some point of) 02, Koushiro + Mimi would both be 17 ~ 18 by around the same point(s), following him.) (* This is despite Taichi being in 11th grade, Jou being in 12th, and them being in 10th.) - Koushiro’s adoptive parents state his biological parents had him “two years” after they married. If not Jou’s, Daisuke & Iori’s particularly, also using their official given ages (7 and 5 respectively) on August 3rd in Adventure, when both witness Digimon for the first times. - Miyako could also potentially be 11 at the start of 02 turning 12 between May 22 - June 20, but her official 02 age is “12″ while the younger 02 kids are officially stated “11″, i.e. not “11″ and “10″ respectively. - the 02 kids would at the least be 11~12 (or possibly 12~13, should they all be on the “older” aged range for their school year) by “Natsu e no Tobira” regardless of conflicting ages issues with them. - Hikari was stated to be older than Takeru in an early Tri interview, though they’re still in the same grade (confirmed). 02′s Memorial Book also confirms her, Daisuke, and Ken [sans Takeru, age not given] to all be the same age (11). - it’s possible that because only Takeru’s age wasn’t given and he’s confirmed “younger”, he could actually be the “younger” age range for their grade while the rest of them [sans also Miyako] are the “older” range. - Meiko has no officially given age. Her grade (correction: same as *TAICHI’S, YAMATO’S & SORA’S - she is literally in Taichi’s class) would assume an age range of around 16 ~ 17, however, note for all we know she could even be slightly older than Taichi; we literally don’t know. EDIT: a 2016 interview likely confirmed her age range being similar to Taichi’s, i.e. 17~. If she’s same age as him she’d be 17-going-on-18 too. This is important to note in order to not place him as being too much older compared to the rest of the kids. He’s still only one grade above Taichi. - The English dub ages almost everyone up by about 1 ~ 2 years from their confirmed ages or grades. Note this is only canon to the English / American / US dub and any dubs that base their scripts off it, not the Japanese version. However, they are canon within their own “universe” if going by its script. * This is apparently retconned / changed by the Tri dub’s dvd summaries, however, it would still be canon to Adventure-02′s dubs in non Tri canon compliant fanworks and the like regardless. * ( Note: before Tri was first announced in 2015, many, many older fanworks contained either the older ages / timeline info or the dub ages timeline / info, especially fanworks by non-Japanese International artists. So, for example, the Adventure Chosen [Taichi and co.] during 02 could be portrayed in their 02 school uniforms at a higher age of +1~2 years, because that was the canon info given at the time. It’d still be canon compliant for non Tri compliant works. +Etc. similar scenarios involving the Adventure kids being older in the various dubs.) - official birthdays + zodiac signs have not been given for any Chosen aside from Miyako’s + her siblings’ zodiac, as Kakudou stated, and the continuity errors with Sora’s birthday in “Our War Game”. Take any such “lists” you see with a huge grain of salt and compare to Miyako’s given zodiac range (Gemini). This would include any such “lists” used by the Japanese fandom, which may also still have incorrect estimates based on the given canon info / statements. (Gemini is May 21 - June 20, give or take “cusp” dates.) - Tri is confirmed to have taken place in the year 2005, “December” “2005″ showing in Takeru’s email. The Japanese school year begins in April and ends in March. This would imply around 8 months passed since the start of Tri, nearly a full year, and likely aging many of the main Chosen regardless by December. Around 4~5 months would have passed between April and August 2005 / late summer. This would include any time passed (+3 or so months) before Dec. Japanese School system notes - Children who have their 6th birthday on or before April 1 enter the first grade of elementary school of that year. This could cause further issues for Mimi’s age. ** Taichi’s drama cd drack [taking place Nov. ‘99] mentions: “And… it’s already 3 months since I’ve been separated from [Agumon]…” he then [later] proceeds to mention re: Hikarigaoka: “In the middle of that screen shone a fuzzy light. The light was… like that time! Yes, that time when Hikari and I met our first Digimon 4 years ago. It looked exactly like that time a Digiegg popped out of Dad’s computer in the middle of the night!” - again conflicting with the novels stating “3 years ago” and giving the “correct” year range of ‘95, as Koushiro’s did. ** re: Hikarigaoka, Jou’s drama cd track [taking place May 2000 as opposed to Taichi’s Nov 1999] mentions: “Shuu-niisan [Jou’s oldest brother] wasn’t even at home in Hikarigaoka when the Digimon first appeared 5 years ago, right?” -^.... implying further that the Hikarigaoka incidents’ date being 1995 is correct ** in the summer of 2001′s drama cd track, Mimi mentions: “Yep! Since last month I’ve been in New York City, and next month I’ll be starting my new school!”. Referring to the above, “next month” would be Sept. 10 2001. Note the dates for Obon in comparison [should Koushiro be visiting his parents’ graves for this reason] would be “August 15″ or “15th day of the 7th lunar month”. In 2018, Obon was “August 25″, in 2019, it was “August 15th”. x  *** Important: there is NO official confirmation, including within the book itself, that the grades in the 02 Memorial Book were from “the end of” 02. That is unconfirmed and mere speculation by the fanbase, using other timeline points as references. Unfortunately, “Our War Game”’s continuity also tends to interfere with this interpretation. Basically, it is nothing but theory at this point and hasn’t been confirmed in any official printed materials. Do not take it as “canon” fact. Though it can obviously be used as references for fic and the like, please keep this in mind, and that multiple continuity issues also conflict with this theory. [+ etc. info on Jou’s ages during 02 + Iori’s ] Note how above, I also mentioned Jou wasn’t in high school yet in 02. he is only ONE GRADE ABOVE Taichi [+ Yamato] (+ Meiko) (+ Sora) This becomes even more obvious with Tri, because he does not wear Tri’s high school uniform in 02. Instead he wears his private school’s dark blue uniform. 02 takes place in 2002. (starting April, through post-Christmas? 2002) Tri took place around April through late December 2005. (And Tri wasn’t even a THING circa 2002 yet. It did not exist until 2015.) in comparison, let’s look at Iori. (the youngest Chosen) he’s in 3rd grade in 02. he meets Jou who is in 9th. both first meet some time before Odaiba Memorial Day (August 3rd) We have no confirmation if either met when Jou was perhaps 14 ~ 15. Jou, regardless, is at 15 during SOME POINT of 02 or even since the very start, even if mathematically it’s maybe impossible. But he’d STILL be much closer to 15 at the start of 02 if that was the case (and this also depends on if his birthday really is after August 3rd.) (for all we know, it could possibly be estimated before while the staff just shrugs) The novels do seem to confirm Jou could have been younger at the start because Yamato initially assumed they were in the same grade. The novel (NOT THE SHOW) also refers to Jou at “11 years” in Adventure. However, the novels had other continuity errors re: Hikarigaoka date, too. The show only gives Jou’s grade (6th in Adventure, 9th in 02.) Again, let’s look back at Iori. He meets Jou when Iori is stated to be in “3rd grade”. the Memorial Book (seems to?) confirm Iori as “9″ however, please note if you follow the “theory” the ages reflect, so-called, “the end of 02″, that’d also place IORI on the early end of his grade’s age ranges (9~10) AT THE “”END OF 02″”. POST-AUGUST 3RD - DECEMBER 31ST [ again, another inconsistency !! ] So, instead, it seems safer to assume Iori would actually be 10 / 9~10 before or by the end of 02 even if it’s mathematically / maybe impossible possibly with a birthday range sometime after August 3rd through post-December 31st or possibly even sometime before August 3rd (if the staff just shrugged this off like w/Sora, for example) then he’d be 10~11 post-02, and +1 year or so in “Natsu e no Tobira” (11~12, 12~13 etc.) (or 10-going-on-11, turning a year older at any point of the following school year) [ again. he’s stated to have a girlfriend. A GIRLFRIEND. BEFORE DAISUKE ] [ unlikely ? if he was 9 at the start of 02 and there ] so, if Jou is 15 ~ 16 in 02, 15 at / around the very start, and Iori is 9 ~ 10 in 02, 10 by the end, their age difference would be about 5 years, while meeting as minors. if Jou is a year younger at the start, it’d be even less. he’d be 14 ~ 15, turning 15 some point during 02 / before the end. (around 4 years for the age difference, give or take) it’s even possible Iori could somehow be 10~11 not very long after the end of 02. or even during 02, with a given conflicting age of “9″. [+perhaps the MOST IMPORTANT piece of information for Koushiro fans:] The Japanese version of Episode 38 of Adventure (i.e. again, the famous Koushiro’s adoption reveal scene) does not mention Koushiro’s biological parents having died “when he was a baby” that was a line / “edit” seemingly added in by the US DUB. Instead, the Japanese version mentions his parents’ meeting / his father’s career and when they had him (iirc it was along the lines of “two years later, they had you”) (hence the estimating for Koushiro’s birth year, noted above) (but I’ll rewatch again + provide full caps and exact dialogue as soon as I’m able to!) basically - as far as I’ve seen when gathering all this info, unless any guidebook states otherwise, Koushiro’s biological parents having died “when he was a baby” was a line added in BY THE AMERICAN DUB (meaning) (if anyone reading can please provide a direct quote / translation on anything to do with the timeframes of Koushiro’s past that isn’t from ep38 of Adventure i.e. from the Japanese guidebooks, the third novel that was still untranslated, etc. PLEASE LET ME KNOW p l e a s e ) because WHEN EXACTLY DID HIS BIOLOGICAL PARENTS DIE, THEN (WHAT IF KOUSHIRO WAS OLDER THAN “A BABY”) (OR AT LEAST OLDER THAN TWO YEARS OLD AT MOST) (BECAUSE WOW DO I HAVE T H E O R I E S) (at the very least it’d be useful info for estimating years / the timeline further) (because otherwise this places Koushiro’s biological parents’ deaths to) (have occurred) (anywhere from the time Koushiro was born [estimated 1989]) [perhaps giving a year i.e. 1990] (..... to the time of pre-MOVING TO ODAIBA [estimated 1995]) [+further info on Sora’s grades below!]

Even on that WTW thread, even on various Wikis, there’s often the absolute insisting that we absolutely only use what info the “canon” has given us.

While for the most part I agree, I especially agree that all of Adventures canon is “canon”, yes, including / especially OWG and the CD Dramas, novels, etc. (though I am hesitant because the novels do have a different continuity while V-tamer did as well, including it managed by different people, also noted below,) (OWG and the CD dramas are near definitely canon by this point though) (since even around Tri, we got the “summer of 2001″ cd drama) I would also like to point out: that post I linked above from the native Japanese translator where they point out the inconsistencies in my other fandom? She mentions things like,

“[ [the staff] may have thought that the fans will misinterpret that (the ages)] [and think (the characters) were one grade below (the others in their same year)]”

for example, even in that series, a major character’s conflicting age was later “shown correctly” (at “17″ instead of “16″ by an August 15th period).

The anime staff for that same series even noted (at an event for Japanese fans) another major characters’ birthday literally conflicts with the script itself. (she states she’s “16″ consistently, but the character can literally only be “15″ at the very start - her birthday is Feb. 14th. The series takes place August 15th, with her being a first-year high school student saying she’s “16″ instead of “15″.)

Japanese animators are human too, you know? Obviously they could make mistakes with the script. Obviously they will correct issues where needed, or otherwise even simply leave it alone.

Kakudou even notes this in the various novels “afterwords”; how Adventures’ planning was all over the place, because no one expected it would become this popular.

Kakudou: (emphasis / italics mine):

“ As the season changed from summer to fall, the contents of this new TV show began to be finalized. During that time, talks were brought up of a comic serialization in Shueisha V-Jump and a story for a movie. The only thing agreed upon was that the character “Taichi” would be the concurrent main character in both, and a separate staff was prepared for the making of the [1st] movie. The name “Taichi” was decided on by Toei, while the original visual of him wearing goggles was produced by the comic artist. With that Taichi at the center, we decided on the ages, specialties, and personalities of the other seven main characters. “ “ The stage for the TV series was basically set in the Digital World, while the movie was based in the real world in a different year. After that, it was all chaos. The story that started in File Island expanded to a bigger scale, and we even inserted in stories of them in the real world. “ “ The real world arc that begins in this second volume was actually only meant to be three episodes at first. Does it mean the entire series’ (+02, +Tri etc) planning was wild all over? No.

Does it mean things are never subject to future change / corrections, provided this fandom is allowed to continue as a franchise? No.

Granted, until we get those corrections, we should still pay attention to the canon and the official ages given.

For all we know, some excuse could be given i.e., “this character was held back” [even though it’s impossible*] or “this character is [older/younger] [than previously stated]” [even though it’s impossible] (* I’ve seen that happen, too - characters stating “you’ll have to repeat [if you fail your grade]!” even though it almost never / rarely happens in real-world Japan the rules can be bent for anime, you know??) (and for example, Sora’s case could have potentially already been “corrected” by her cd drama track “October 2000″, which actually came out after OWG.) (Even OWG has Japan’s spring break starting much earlier than usual - i.e. around March 4th, beginning of March, instead of around the final week of March before school resumes April 1st. This is literally where the “timing” issue for literally all of this may come from.) ... Because I’ve also seen cases where these inconsistencies weren’t corrected. And the fandoms ended up (mostly) fine in the end. So, let up on those 1~2 year gaps / inconsistencies a bit, please ?? (note: Adventure first aired in ‘99.

HELLO!

Day 19 - Favorite Non-tri. Adventure Movie

EASY CHOICE! Honestly I love all of the first four DigiAdv movies, because of the art style or the plot. Yes, Hurricane Touchdown included.

HOWEVER... My favorite had been for years this particular pseudo-Hosoda movie.

Diablomon Strikes Back. This movie might be one of the best of the Adv-verse movies in my opinion, because it reinforces teamwork. Sure, a lot of the characters seem to be put aside like happens in OWG but the difference here is them trying to gather and fight together.

And when I meant EVERYONE it’s literally EVERYONE. Mimi, Joe and Sora are trying to get there but there’s some issues delaying their arrival, most probably caused by Diablomon’s schemes. The movie focus on Diablomon trying to take revenge from Taichi and Yamato, searching for the boys.

Taichi is the head of the counterattack. He’s pretty responsible and mature here, following his development from Adv-to-02. Daisuke, however, is still silly and innocent wanting to help Taichi but gets himself down by his beloved role model who tells him to stay and prevent the Kuramon from get spread in Tokyo.

The oddities of this movie are definitely Daisuke being somehow polite with Koushiro and Joe -- the latter even is called by “senpai” so I believe this is just Daisuke growing up and changing little by little. The 02 Jogress pairs were separated around Tokyo catching Kuramon and sending them back to Koushiro’s computer. As things look like easy... The Chosen Children get into troubles through the movie.

Omegamon vs Diablomon here is cool, also Takeru and Hikari aiding their siblings is one of the coolest scenes in the movie -- Like I said, EVERYONE helps. No matter if gets a bigger or smaller task, everyone helps in this movie.

But what shines brighter in this movie is the 02 trio -- Daisuke-MIyako-Iori. I would say Ken too, but all he did was somehow minimal while these three were the stars of the movie: Daisuke’s plan to gather all the Kuramon swarm away from the city so the could fight caught me off guard in the very first times I watched this movie. He messed things up yeah, but he also quickly finds a solution. I say to pay attention at the scenes and how he’s able to answer Ken’s “why the Rainbow Bridge” question. Miyako’s very much the badass here, she can HACK things. Very much. She follows Daisuke’s orders for the plan and then she and Iori meet to the fight. Daisuke and Ken get their own problem which is the Kuramon swarm carrying V-mon and Wormmon with them, so they have to go there by themselves lol. Iori saves the day, by giving the idea of using the phones to send all the Kuramon to Koushiro, showing why he deserved the Digimental of Knowledge.

About the others, they help too. EVERYONE HELPS IN THIS MOVIE. Koushiro supervises the operation, the Kuramon counter, etc. Taichi and Yamato help destroying the original Diablomon, with the help of Takeru and Hikari. Joe gets late but helps to provide the bikes to let Daisuke and Ken go faster to the Rainbow Bridge. Also, he grabs a “possible” girlfriend (lol) Sora also gets late into the action, but she helps by giving emotional support to Taichi and Yamato, when they had lost hope. And Mimi gets late as well, but she assists Koushiro in the computer room.

LIKE, THE BEST OF THE BEST!

This movie has my favorite Daisuke line. Has Ken enabling Daisuke’s determination via sass. Has Target playing as insert song when Imperialdramon rises and flies over a very much sad Taichi. Has very much ship teases. And some easter eggs in the end of the movie -- ringtones playing Buttler-Fly and I Wish, the OG Adventure series’ OP & ED respectively.

GOSH, THAT WAS MORE LIKE A FREAKING REVIEW HUH?? Please, watch this movie I beg to you. The dub version of it is also good, I like it. However, I’m talking about the original version here oops.
